About Innovate

A leading market research provider in the US was not able to meet the growing demand for highly specific and diverse samples from a single supplier. To accommodate this the client had to log onto multiple supplier portals to set up surveys and had to in-dependently monitor each one of them for completion and quality checks. Needless to say, the process was complex and time-consuming.
The idea of creating a single platform to meet such diverse sampling needs was then born. 6 years later the platform has not only become a leading global panel supplier but is on the revolutionary path of becoming a one-stop solution for all kinds of complex sampling needs.

A US market research provider struggled to meet diverse sample demands, leading to complex, time-consuming processes across multiple supplier portals. To simplify, they created a single platform, now a global panel supplier, and evolving into a comprehensive solution for complex sampling needs.

Tech stack

Implementation

To counter the bottlenecks in the research process, we developed the following Survey tool for our client:

  • 1 Admin Dashboard
  • 2 Panel Integrations
  • 3 Panel Website

Project managers can log in to this tool and from their dashboard screen they can create new projects for each survey request that they accept.

The dashboard screen displays a list of all the ongoing and completed surveys.
The tool also tracks metrics such as several completes, length of interaction (LOI), incidence rate (IR) cost per interaction (CPI), etc., to monitor the survey progress and performance.
Based on the survey performance, the project managers can take relevant actions such as pausing or stopping the survey from the dashboard screen itself.

  • Admin dashboard- allows to create, monitor, and manage surveys within a centralized dashboard, tracking key metrics and taking necessary actions as needed.

We wanted to ensure the tool could fulfill all sorts of complex sampling requirements.

We integrated more than 30 supplier APIs to provide a comprehensive list of diverse panels to choose from.
We provided the functionality to choose multiple panels for a single survey to meet the diverse sample requirement.
We built a functionality to limit the number of responses from a particular panel as well.

The client wanted to minimize their dependency on external suppliers. So we developed a panel website for them with an easy respondent recruitment process.

The website was structured for a seamless survey taking experience while directing and redirecting respondents to the external hosting sites.
We provided the functionality to choose multiple panels for a single survey in order to meet the diverse sample requirement.
The website also manages the rewards and loyalty points for registered respondents.

Challenges

We faced several challenges while catering to large user requests, such as increasing costs and ensuring the immense security of the surveys from fraud responses. However, with our strategic implementation, we were able to meet the growing demand for highly specific and diverse samples from a single supplier and allow them to manage multiple projects.

  • 01. Security & Fraud
    More experienced respondents started to manipulate the survey process to get completion credit without actually completing it. It became necessary to implement robust fraud protection algorithms that could not be tampered with.
  • 02. High Volume of Survey Requests
    As the tool considerably reduced the turnaround time for results, more and more survey requests started to pour in every single day making it impossible to process them all quickly.
  • 03. Third Party Dependency
    Although the tool had solved the most pressing challenges of market research, the client was still investing an enormous amount in third-party software licenses to manage sales and billing.

Solutions

We tackled every challenge with a futuristic solution so our client could stay ahead in the game:

  • 01. Integrating Fraud Prevention Services
    We used a mix of third-party integrations and in-built algorithms to build several layers in our fraud detection mechanism.
    Fingerprinting Method: We enabled user IP tracking and PID tracking along with any related survey studies taken in the past by the user. A the researcher can choose all three or any of these fingerprinting methods to permit unique users or respond-ents to take a survey.
    External Fraud Detection Services: We integrated fraud detection services like Relevantid and SampleChain for an additional check to ensure we redi-rect only genuine respondents to the survey site.
    Open Ended Validation: We implemented an OE validator for advance verification. Selecting this option fetches a couple of random questions from an in-built question library and are presented to each respondent. Answers to these questions are then ana- lysed for parameters like context, slow or fast response, mistakes, etc. using an R & Python algorithm. Based on this analysis a score is allocated to each respondent and based on this score the respondent is either redirected to the survey or back to the supplier site.
    Length of Interaction: Furthermore, we used the approximate LOI suggested by the researcher as a benchmark to pass responses as qualified. For advanced survey hosting sites that have their in-survey behavior analytics mechanisms in place, we enabled a server-to-server call to confirm the validity of the responses after a survey has been completed by the respondent.
  • 02. DIY Tool
    To quickly process the high volume of survey requests, we created a DIY tool for researchers to set up and manage their surveys. We built a feature to check the financial feasibility of the study. Based on the sample size, LOI, and demographic and geographic criteria of the target audience, the feasibility tool can provide the best IR and CPI for the survey. Once the researchers have created a survey they can select panels based on their sampling requirement. They can also restrict the number of responses from a particular panel.
  • 03. Streamlined Business Processes
    To eliminate third-party dependencies and switch between the systems to manage sales to delivery cycle and billing & invoicing, we developed bidding and accounting modules in the tool.
    Bidding: Project managers can set up an account for a client and initiate a bid for each survey request received from the client. After the bid has been approved by the requesting client, the bid amount will be added to the associated account for future billing.
    Accounts: We integrated QuickBooks API into the accounts module of the tool. Once a survey status changes to complete, an invoice can be generated and sent to the client through this module without having to switch channels.
    Reports: We built the report module for the client to track monthly sales & billing reports, team load management and sup- plier performance etc. By eliminating these third-party dependencies, we saved our client 50,000 USD in licensing costs per year. Other than the above-mentioned challenges and solutions, we tackled the increasing server load by using AWS load balancers and created primary and secondary servers in Mongo DB for faster performance.
  • Integrating fraud detection techniques

    We enhanced fraud detection using various methods including fingerprinting, external services integration, open-ended validation, and interaction length validation.

  • DIY tools

    Allow researchers to manage high survey volumes efficiently, including a feasibility check and panel selection with response limits.

  • Streamlines business process

    We removed third-party dependencies by integrating bidding and accounting modules, allowing seamless survey management from sales to billing, with savings of $50,000 annually.

Results

Since its inception, the tool has seen immense adoption and is among the most used tools for market research today. Researchers find it easy to target a specific geography, age group, income bracket, urban or suburban population, or even diverse ethnic groups within a geography using this tool.
